An on-duty Alabama police officer has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Vestavia Hills officer was pronounced dead shortly after being rushed to the hospital.  Police could be heard over the radio telling medics to “step it up” as they and officers from Birmingham escorted the ambulance, then stretcher into the emergency room.

The incident took place in the officer’s cruiser while near City Hall and police headquarters, which is also near his wife’s place of employment, according to Al.com.

Police officials said they are asking for prayers for the family and fellow officers.

Law enforcement officer suicide is more widespread than many people know due to the fact that it isn’t talked about that often – by the media or officers themselves.
