The doctor who was recently dragged bloody, kicking and screaming off of a United Airlines flight following an overbooking might not be the noble martyr you think he is.
69-year-old Vietnamese Doctor David Dao -who has gone viral since he was pulled off a plane by force after refusing to leave- was reportedly convicted of trading prescription narcotics for sexual favors with another man at his practice in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.
According to Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure documents, Dao was arrested in 2003 following an undercover investigation after Dao became sexually interested in patient (and later, office manager) Brian Case, whom Dao exchanged prescription narcotics reportedly for sexual encounters and discreet hotel room meetings.
When Dao was convicted in 2004 on a slew of felonies, he was placed on half a decade of supervised probation, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.
A Vietnamese by birth, Dao went to medical school in 1970s Vietnam before coming to the United States with his wife, Teresa. They have five children (four of whom are doctors) and several grandchildren as well.
According to the New York Post, Dao is also a poker player- his player profile on the World Series of Poker website lists his total earnings as $234,664 since he joined the poker circuit in 2006.
The United Airlines incident sparked worldwide outrage, as well as some pretty funny social media posts, which we’ve added below.
