Firefighting officials in Sterling, Virginia, announced that a firefighter died and 12 others were injured after a home exploded late Friday evening.

According to CNN, firefighters were at the home checking on a gas leak just after 7:30 p.m. Friday. Firefighters located a 500-gallon underground propane tank leaking underneath the home. Firefighters called for a “Haz-mat” team. A few moments later, the tank exploded, killing one firefighter and directly injuring two others.

The residents were in the home when the explosion happened and were transported with injuries.

In total, 10 firefighters were also directly injured due to the explosion.

Firefighters believe this was an isolated incident but are investigating it further.
