Deputy, suspect shot in Alabama while serving mental commitment papers

A Lauderdale County, AL Deputy was shot yesterday evening while a serving a mental commitment, according to Chief Deputy Richard Richey.

According to WHNT, Deputy Randall McCrary was shot in Florence, Alabama while serving the court papers in the vicinity of the 1800 block of Ridge Avenue just north of the University of North Alabama campus.

Lauderdale County Deputy Chief R. Ritchie told LEOAffairs that Deputy McCrary is “in the hospital after a surgery last night and is in good condition”. He continued to say “the state is doing an investigation of the shooting (on behalf) of the department”.

Alabama State Bureau of Investigation declined to comment further on the matter, though they did release the following press statement at 10PM Wednesday:

“Special Agents with ALEA’s State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) are investigating an officer-involved shooting at the request of the Lauderdale County District Attorney. The shooting occurred today, Feb. 3 at a residence on Ridge Avenue in Florence. It resulted in both a Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Deputy and a male subject being shot. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be turned over to the Lauderdale County District Attorney.”

The shooting suspect, identified by investigators as Timothy Vincent Murphy, was also taken to the same hospital in Huntsville, though his condition is unknown at this time.
