Deputy loses eye after woman kicks him in the face during DUI arrest

Dec. 12–A Pima County Sheriff’s sergeant lost his left eye after a handcuffed woman kicked him in the face with her boot during a DUI arrest this weekend, officials say.

Deputies arrested Yesennia Gonzalez, 28, on suspicion of DUI about midnight Saturday in the area of East Drexel Road and South Alvernon Way, the department said in a news release.

Deputies placed Gonzalez in handcuffs and were trying to put her in a patrol car when she began kicking at them.

During the struggle, Gonzalez kicked Sgt. Mark Bustamante in the left eye with the heel of her boot, the release said.

Bustamante was taken to a hospital and doctors operated on his eye, but couldn’t save it.

Gonzalez was booked into the Pima County jail on two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, one count of resisting arrest, and one count of DUI.

  1. The Sgt. really needs to sue this woman in civil court. She needs to pay for her actions. I also hope that they brought additional charges against her for maiming or whatever the most serious charge they could bring in addition to the DUI. Prays for my wounded Brother.
