The mayor of a South Carolina town was apparently trying to do his best Florida-man impression when he was pulled over with an open container- while riding a lawnmower through town.
Mayor John Garder of Aynor led Horry County police on a low-speed chase through town on his riding mower, all while in possession of an open container of alcohol.
Upon stopping, he apologized for the beer and was instructed to pour it out.
Gardner, who is up for re-election this year, said he had put gas in the lawnmower after cutting his mother-in-law’s grass, and picked up the beer at the gas station. He contends that the container was not opened and that he was pulled over for having no headlights.
“It was just a misunderstanding,” he told The News & Observer.
The mayor was not cited by the officer.
