In a tragic day for law enforcement, two officers have been shot and killed in shootouts with suspects. Both suspects were also killed in the gunfights.
Trevor Casper, a Wisconsin state trooper, was involved in a shootout with an unidentified bank robber who also fatally shot an elderly man. A report by NBC News says the suspect and Casper traded gunfire around 6:30 p.m. about an hour north of Milwaukee in the town of Fond du Lac. The suspect was also killed in the shootout. Casper had just graduated from State Patrol Academy in December.
Michael Johnson, a 14-year veteran with the San Jose police force in California, was killed in a shootout with an intoxicated man threatening to commit suicide. According to NBC Bay Area, the suspect, which police earlier identified as Scott Dunham, was found dead on the balcony of his home. Johnson may have been struck when officers returned fire.
