A well-known Washington D.C. detective was fatally shot Friday in Waldorf, Maryland, according to authorities.

Metropolitan Police Detective Timothy Eugene Francis, 50 is believed to have been shot by his wife, Christine Francis, 41, before she took her own life.

Prior to the shootings, Christine Francis posted several pictures, videos and messages on social media about their marriage and kids.

Detective Francis had been with the Metro PD for 20 years, and his father was also an officer with the department for over 40 years, according to WTOP.

According to WTOP, “Mourning the tragic loss of our colleague and friend is extremely difficult,” said Chief Peter Newsham. “Detective Francis spent two decades protecting the community from violence, and to learn that he was the victim of a homicide is heartbreaking.”
