The Nashville police have released bodycam video of a controversial officer-involved shooting that shut down a Nashville highway after activist groups pressured the Department claiming the shooting was not justified.

A video showing nine Nashville police officers surrounding the man holding a box cutter went viral after a bystander posted it on social media. Many called the shooting unnecessary as the man only held a box cutter and officers had other less-lethal options.

According to USA Today, Landon Eastep had an hours-long standoff with police Thursday afternoon. A state trooper saw Eastep sitting on a guardrail not far from downtown Nashville. During the interaction, Eastep pulled out a box cutter and threatened the trooper. Backup was then called.

During the negotiation, Eastep kept his right hand in his pocket while he held the box cutter in his left.

Eastep then pulled his right hand out, grip something, and raised his arm. That’s when officers fired multiple bullets, killing Eastep.

A total of nine officers opened fire.

The round cylinder that Eastep pulled out of his right pocket was not a firearm.

Six of the nine officers are on administrative duty, as is protocol.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the facts and so is the Nashville District Attorney’s office.
