An 11-year-old boy got the scare of his life when a crook jumped into the family’s SUV in East Harlem and took off with him inside, police said Tuesday.
The boy’s 36-year-old father popped into City Fresh Market on Third Ave. near E. 121st St. shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday, leaving his son waiting in the family’s 2017 orange Rogue SUV with the engine running.
The father had been in the store about 10 minutes when an opportunistic robber jumped into the driver’s seat and peeled off.
The crook kicked the boy out of the car 20 minutes later five miles away, abandoning him at Bolton and Lafayette Aves. in Soundview.
The boy called his father and quickly located by police investigating the case.
On Monday the boy was taken to Harlem Hospital to be treated for minor back pain after reporting that while in the SUV the robber hit two parked cars before letting him go.
The suspect was last seen in Queens 9:30 p.m. Sunday stealing a cellphone charger from a BP convenience store on Hillside Ave. in Bellerose.
Cops on Tuesday released surveillance images of the suspect getting into the SUV along with additional images of him. Police are asking the public’s help identifying him and tracking him down.
He is described as dark-skinned, about 5-foot-7 and 150 pounds with a full beard. He was wearing dark-colored pants, a multi-colored jacket, a dark-colored hoodie and a dark-colored baseball cap and sneakers.
