A California law enforcement officer was killed during a so-called “active shooter” incident while taking a civilian on a ride-along in Northern California on Wednesday morning.

El Dorado County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Ishmael was killed and a passenger was injured during a shooting in Somerset, an unincorporated community sixty miles from Sacramento.

Both the deputy and his ride-along passenger were shot by an unknown number of people, who reportedly attacked while Ishmael was responding to a call for service.

“It is with an extremely heavy heart that we announce that we lost a deputy in the line of duty this morning,” the Sheriff’s Office wrote in a statement.

According to Fox News, the condition of the injured passenger is “unknown at this time.”

Ishmael was with El Dorado County for four years, and previously worked as an officer for the Placerville Police.

A video showing the procession for the deputy was posted to social media, and multiple agencies -including his former employer- expressed condolences over the loss.
