A Northern California police officer was shot and killed Friday evening while performing a traffic stop but according to the Police Chief, it was his heroic actions all the way up to his death that led his fellow officers to the suspect.

According to SF Gate, officer Jorge Alvarado pulled a car over on Friday evening around 10:45. Sometime during the confrontation, the suspect began firing at the five-year veteran of the force. Alvardo returned fire.

The Salinas Police Chief stated Alvardo’s actions during the stop and subsequent shootout helped officers later track down and arrest the suspect.

The mayor of Salinas has asked for the community to rally behind the police saying, “They are hurting, and they need to know our community supports them.”

The police department has not released the name of the suspect nor have they released the charges.
