A Santa Cruz deputy was killed and two officers injured during an ambush attack on Saturday night in the Ben Lomond neighborhood.

According to KGO, police received a tip about a suspicious van filled with weapons and bomb-making devices.

Officers followed the vehicle and were attacked by gunfire and explosives after they pulled into a narrow street.

Sergeant Damon Gutzwiller was killed and the two other officers were hit by shrapnel or possibly gunfire.

“Words cannot express the pain we feel for Damon and his family,” Sheriff Jim Hart said, “He was the kind of person we all hope to be. Today, we lost a hero. We are grateful to have known him and we mourn with his family.”

The suspect, Steve Carillo, did get away, but was eventually captured and arrested by police.

Carillo was shot during his arrest and is expected to survive.

The FBI and other law enforcement officials found several home-made bombs at Carillo’s residence.

The two other officers injured have not been identified, but both are expected to make full recoveries.
