A rookie Arizona DPS trooper was fatally shot by a suspect following a traffic stop on Interstate 10 late last night. A second trooper was wounded but is expected to survive.

The fallen trooper has been identified as Tyler Edenhofer. He graduated from the state trooper academy on May 4th.

Emergency operators began receiving calls at approximately 10:20 p.m. about a motorist throwing objects at vehicles and driving erratically.

Once troopers arrived the man began fighting with them. During the struggle, the suspect was able to gain control of one of the trooper’s firearms and shot trooper Dalan Dorris in the shoulder, and fatally shot trooper Edenhofer.

No information has been released on the shooter.

“The DPS family is in mourning. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. Lives have been shattered and ruined and we’re all in a little bit of a state of shock this morning,” Col. Frank Milstead, director of the Arizona Department of Public Safety, said.

Edenhofer is the second law enforcement officer fatally shot in the past 24 hours. A Milwaukee police officer was shot and killed by a suspect wanted on gun and drug charges yesterday.

We will update this story as more information becomes available.
