Student in for welfare check opens fire in Texas Tech Police HQ

UPDATE: The suspect, 19-year-old Hollis A. James is now in custody. Officers were conducting a welfare check on Hollis when they discovered drugs in his dorm room and brought him in for questioning.

When he was brought in he reportedly pulled out a gun and shot the officer in the head, killing him.

Earlier:

A Texas Tech University police officer has been shot and killed by a student who was brought in for a welfare check.

After coming in, the student pulled his gun and shot the officer, fatally striking him.

The shooting took place at approximately 8:00 p.m., according to KCBD.

The shooter then fled and the campus is currently on lockdown.

Reports indicate the shooter is red-haired, 6-feet-tall and 140 lbs with blue eyes wearing a white shirt and blue jeans.  He is driving a silver 2001 BMW SUV.
