Update: The suspect accused of shooting a San Diego police officer during a pursuit has been taken into custody and is in custody after an almost 10 hours standoff after he barricaded himself in an apartment.
The injured officer was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital and is in stable condition after undergoing surgery.
Earlier: The shooting of a San Diego Police officer early Monday morning has prompted a SWAT standoff.
The initial incident took place in the Mountain View area after officers began pursuing a vehicle around half-past midnight.
When the suspect abandoned the vehicle and took flight on foot, he began firing at pursuing officers, striking one.
SDPD Lieutenant Adam Sharki stated that officers were unable to return fire.
The suspect has since barricaded himself near an apartment complex, prompting the evacuation of select units as SWAT took over the scene.
“Officers have been evacuating people that we believe should be evacuated,” Sharki told FOX 5, “Everybody else is being asked to shelter in place.”
The wounded officer was taken to a nearby hospital for surgery and is now in stable condition.
