An Independence, Mo., police officer is hospitalized after being shot in the head shortly before 10 a.m. (CST) this morning.
Officers originally responded to a burglary in progress call and were met with gunfire after arriving on scene, according to KMBC 9. One officer was struck in the head during the shootout and suspects fled.
Fox 4 reports they were taken into custody following a chase.
A witness to the events on South Delaware Avenue said the house where the officer was shot was riddled with bullets. When she heard the gunfire outside her home she witnessed officers firing toward the home.
“They had shot through, one of the garage doors was completely shot through, and pulled one of the guys out,” witness Tracy Crookham told Fox 4. “And then it looked like they pulled another guy out through the back, and they were all surrounding the house next door so we assumed that somebody was still inside.”
Reporting indicates the chase started at a home near 35th and Delaware Ave. and ended near 23rd Street and Maywood.
It’s reported the car’s registration shows the owner is from the home on South Delaware.
One suspect was reportedly taken away in an ambulance at 23rd and Cedar.
A spokesman for Centerpoint Medical Center confirmed the victim is a male officer and would only say, “he’s alive.”
Fox 4 reports dozens of officers arrived at the scene in the afternoon and are beginning to piece together evidence from the suspect’s house as well as the neighboring home which also sustained damage during the shooting.
Police officers from several counties are helping to investigate the scene.
