Bill Bratton, the two-time and occasionally embattled commissioner of the New York Police Department will be resigning on September 1st.
Bratton will be replaced by Chief of Department James O’Neill, according to NBC New York.
Bratton is the only law enforcement officer to serve as head of both the LAPD and NYPD. He also served as commissioner of the Boston Police Department.
Bratton was widely credited with reducing crime in New York through his ‘broken windows’ style of policing.
A news conference with Mayor Bill Deblasio is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon to make the announcement.
