The body camera footage that showed the shooting of a US Park Police officer by a fleeing suspect has been released to the public.
While the incident —which left one injured and one dead— took place nearly a month ago in Washington, DC, the footage was finally released on Monday.
The body camera recording “shows the significant sections of the body-worn camera footage from the involved USPP officer and is intended to help members of the community gain a better understanding of what occurred,” the Park Police said in a briefing.
“This incident is still under investigation, and all statements in this briefing are based on the details we know at this point,” the agency added.
The shooting was carried out by 30-year-old Turell Delonte Campbell, who was being pursued down 12th Street NW by a plainclothes Park Police officer wearing agency-required identification markings.
“Get down, you’re [going to] get hurt,” the pursuing officer shouted as the pursuit continued down M Street NW.
“No, I’m not,” Campbell said smugly.
In a flash of an instant, Campbell turned and fired on the officer with his illegally-owned Glock 23, wounding him.
Responding despite being wounded, the officer emptied the magazine of his Sig Sauer service pistol in Campbell’s direction, mortally wounding the suspect.
The officer then called for air and medical, requesting a tourniquet for his wounds. Another lawman could later be seen standing over the lifeless body of Turell Campbell.
According to the US Attorney’s Office, Campbell was a felon and prohibited from owning firearms.
In May of 2023, he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess and distribute a controlled substance, and possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school.
