Body camera has been released by Utah’s Ogden Police Department, depicting a fatal officer-involved shooting that left an armed suspect dead.
26-year-old Ogden man Jovany Mercado, who was shot by four police officers on August 16, refused to drop a knife when ordered by police, instead he advanced towards the officers in an aggressive manner.
On the night of the shooting, three OPD cruisers were dispatched to a house party after partygoers claimed a strange man trespassed onto the property and was holding a knife.
Officers shouted orders at Mercado to drop the knife, gave him plenty of time to surrender, and even backed up as he moved towards them.
According to the Standard-Examiner, Mercado continued his advance, and officers were forced to open fire, killing the man.
Ogden Police Chief Randy Watt reported that all four officers opened fire.
While Mercado’s death caused a significant backlash in the community concerning the use of force, the release of the body camera footage sheds light on the dangerous situation that officers faced.
