Westminster police in Colorado have released body cam video showing a fatal officer-involved shooting where the woman did not follow the officer’s command during a traffic stop and reached for a weapon.
According to 9News, the incident happened on July 25th. The officer approached the woman, identified as Alysha Duran, after he found she was parked and facing the wrong direction.
The officer attempted to interact with Duran to assess the situation and saw her ignore his requests. She did eventually roll down the window but did not say anything to the officer. Then the officer noticed something sitting next to Duran and asked what the item was. As she moved her hand to grab the weapon, the officer identified it as a gun, began backing away, and pulled out his own firearm and began shooting away.
Duran was struck and eventually pronounced dead.
A stray bullet did strike a second vehicle, though no one was hurt.
The officer is now on paid administrative leave pending an independent investigation.
