Nine protesters locked themselves together and erected a tripod in the middle of a runway at London’s fifth busiest airport – temporarily shutting it down on Tuesday.
The activists, who were all white, were protesting under the banner of Black Lives Matter UK, claiming that the London City Airport is for the “elite.”
The group released a statement saying it was protesting Britain’s “environmental impact on the lives of black people locally and globally.”
Flights were suspended Tuesday at London City Airport, which serves many corporate travelers—according to CNN.
The group is apparently unhappy about that fact that the airport plans to expand its capacity, “which would negatively affect the surrounding community in one of London’s most deprived areas.”
All nine protesters were arrested for breaching airport bylaws and for being “unlawfully airside” among other things.
Many people on social media seemed a little confused over the protest, since the group was merging two seemingly unrelated causes –Black Lives Matter and environmental issues.
“Black people are the first to die, not the first to fly, in this racist climate crisis,” they said. They flew banners saying: “Climate Crisis is a Racist Crisis.”
Black Lives Matter UK tweeted out a statement about the protest to try and clear up any confusion:
“There’s a need for white people to take responsibility in a society that privileges them through racism and anti-black racism in particular.”
