The President of Guatemala claims that around 100 ISIS terrorists were captured in his country, creating consternation among those observing the politically-motivated caravan of Central American migrants heading towards the US border.
Last Thursday, Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales leaked the news of the capture, which had previously been information privy to high-ranking officials and the Guatemalan Secretariat of Strategic Intelligence.
According to National Guatemalan Newspaper Prensa Libre, Morales reported that his administration captured “close to 100 people completely linked to terrorist issues, with ISIS and that not only have we arrested them within our territory, but they have been deported to their countries of origin.”
The publication has also covered how Guatemala has become a human-trafficking corridor to the US from nations ranging from Somalia to Afghanistan. After a long journey that spans several countries, the migrants often obtain fake passports in Guatemala and make their way north towards the US.
In addition to terror cells, Guatemalan military and police have also captured members of organized cartels, such as MS-13.
