Two Chicago Police officers are facing nightmarish amounts of criticism and potential after a passersby took a photo of them sleeping in their patrol vehicle over the weekend.
The photo was posted to social media on Saturday and has since been utilized by mayoral candidate Ja’Mal Green in an effort to criticize mandatory overtime.
“Both of them, not one was out, both of them were asleep, they probably had a rough day, they may have done a lot of overtime and these are the effects of it,” Green said.
According to WGNTV, Green has been a long-time critic of the Chicago PD since his activist days, and is rather critical of Mayor Rahm Emmanuel’s decision to deploy 600 additional officers to combat the surge of violence that threatens the Windy City.
Chicago PD, however, released a statement saying that the two officers were not overtaxed.
“Officer welfare, health and safety are among our highest priorities,” the statement read. “The officers involved in this incident were not on an overtime initiative and worked minimal amounts of overtime since July 1st and didn’t work overtime this week or weekend.”
The officers will reportedly face disciplinary action and are being investigated by internal affairs.
“Sleeping on duty is just inexcusable, it’s big deal,” said Former Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, who is also running for mayor. “”If it’s retrain, discipline, or prosecute, that’s what you do. You just don’t reverse course.”
The investigation is ongoing.
