An officer who stepped in to protect an active crime scene is getting calls for him to be fired on social media after a viral video showed the officer punching a man.
According to WBNS, the officer was one of many at a home on Friday. All of the officers on-scene were investigating a report of shots fired.
You can hear in the video, people yelling at the officers in an aggressive manner. One woman is shouting “look at the hate” as an officer stands in the driveway to make sure no one interferes.
A man then suddenly charges at a woman and two kids. That man says the woman and kids were his and he was trying to pull them away from the officers.
The officer in question then confronts the man, pushes him, and punches him in the face.
The video, shared all over social media, runs for 55 seconds.
The Columbus Police Department says it will release the body cam video. It also points out that though the punch was shocking, the officer has a right to protect anyone near the active crime scene.
The department has also launched a more comprehensive investigation into the incident.
