May 1—An “active shooter” was reported on the grounds of the Mount Horeb Middle School but the gunman did not breach the building and no one has been injured except the gunman, the Mount Horeb Area School District said.

The incident sent all schools in the district into a lockdown and a search of the middle school by law enforcement found no additional suspects or anyone injured, District Superintendent Steve Salerno said.

“The threat has been neutralized outside of the building,” Salerno said. “Again, do not report to any of our schools at this time. Once we confirm the safety of all we will begin the process of reunification offsite with families.”

The district’s nearby intermediate center has been evacuated. Families can pick up their students at the district’s bus garage at 421 W. Garfield St.

Students at the middle school are not being evacuated at this time. Dismissal of other district buildings is awaiting police approval.

Mount Horeb police descended on the building following reports of an active shooter Wednesday morning, a police staffer said.

The school is located on 900 E. Garfield St. in the village. About 500 students attend the middle school, according to the state Department of Public Instruction.

Mount Horeb’s intermediate, middle and high schools all sit on a combined campus area east of the village’s downtown.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
