Three suspects were taken into custody early this morning in Liberty, North Carolina after gunfire erupted while an officer attempted to make a traffic stop.
Police say a Liberty police officer noticed a driver weaving in and out of traffic around 2:40AM. He suspected a drunk driver was behind the wheel then noticed his tags were expired.
As the officer tried to initiate a traffic stop, the driver took off and crashed into a wooded area off Old 421 Road, Fox 8 reported.
Police say the driver then started shooting in the officer’s direction and the three suspects then ran away. North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Guilford County Sheriff’s Office and Randolph County Sheriff’s Office were all involved with the search. They were able to track down one of the suspects, found hiding in a swampy area.
The other two suspects were taken into custody a short time later, with the help of the police K-9 unit.
Deputies say the men, ranging in age from 18 to 22, were driving a stolen SUV that was involved in an armed robbery in Wake County.
