Two men -one being an illegal immigrant- attending a Maryland high school as students were charged with raping a preteen girl.
Jonathan Coreas-Salamanca, a 20-year-old from El Salvador, was reportedly arrested while at a Montgomery County-area high school on February 13, along with 19-year-old Ivan Reyes Lopez.
Both men have been charged with second-degree rape, and Coreas-Salamanca faces additional charges of sexual abuse of a minor and a third-degree sexual offense.
The elder offender reportedly exchanged explicit text messages and photographs with the 11-year-old girl using a provided mobile phone, and arranged meetups for sexual encounters.
The victim’s father discovered the phone on Christmas Eve and notified the authorities.
“[The victim’s father] described a text message where Suspect Coreas-Salamanca advised Victim A that she bit his penis the last time she performed fellatio,” court documents state. “Suspect Coreas-Salamanca’s purpose in sending the text message was to teach Victim A how to better perform fellatio.”
According to FOX News, Immigration and Customs Enforcement is aware of the case, and put in a detainer order for Coreas-Salamanca.
“US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) lodged a detainer for Jonathan Coreas-Salamanca, an unlawfully present Salvadoran national, with Montgomery County Detention Center on Feb. 14, following his arrest by Montgomery County Police for sex abuse of a minor and second-degree rape,” ICE spokeswoman Kaitlyn Pote said in a statement.
Previously a “sanctuary city,” Montgomery County struggles with crime related to illegal immigrants, and recently rolled back its more permissive policies.
However, the county will release illegals on ICE detainers if the agents to not arrive on time or miss their pickup appointments, causing frustrations for federal law enforcement.
Court documents reveal that Lopez emigrated from Honduras nearly three years ago and was living with his uncle in Silver Spring. He is accused of luring a different 11-year-old girl into his family’s apartment, where he reportedly sexually assaulted her.
Lopez, seemingly not understanding age of consent laws, began arguing with investigators during his interrogation (with the help of a Spanish translator), claiming that he led the victim by hand to his bedroom and the two had “consensual vaginal intercourse.”
The Daily Mail reported that Coreas-Salamanca faces up to 55 years in prison whereas Lopez faces 20 years. The former faces a higher sentence because he is accused of repeatedly molesting his victim.
