A person who was the focus of a social welfare check was shot and killed by police officers after they stabbed two of them in Long Island.
According to police, a social worker called 911 while doing a wellness check on two residents inside an apartment at the Blue Ridge Condominiums.
When officers arrived, one of the residents used a knife to stab two officers before being shot by one or more officers.
According to ABCNY, one of the injured officers was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital and the other officer was taken to their by ambulance.
A third officer was also reported to be injured but it is not clear how they were injured.
“We are thankful that the two Suffolk County Police Officers injured in today’s incident are in critical but stable condition at this time. We are incredibly grateful for the outstanding care provided by Dr. Vosswinkel and the staff at Stony Brook University Medical Center,” Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association said in a statement.
“We ask that all Long Islanders keep our Officers in their thoughts and prayers, and God willing, they will make a full recovery from the horrific incident that took place earlier today.”
Neighbors of the man killed by the police officers claim they reported his behavior to the police and the homeowners association in the past.
“He’s stalked a couple of girls. Girls have made complaints,” neighbor Maria Daume said. “I know my neighbor was just one of the people who got into a confrontation with him, I got into a verbal confrontation with him. That’s just the people that I know.”
Another resident believes he was also behind the vandalization of cars in their community.
